Maintaining Your HVAC System

Keeping your HVAC System, (heating, ventilating, and air conditioning ) maintained will save you money on your energy bills and save you from having to call the repair man. Most maintenance items will not cost you money. Furnace filters will cost a couple dollars depending on which type of filters you purchase. Upgrading to a programmable thermostat will set you back anywhere from 20 dollars on up.

What to Maintain on Your HVAC System

There are several areas on you HVAC system that you can maintain yourself. Your HVAC system filter is the most important item to maintain. Changing these several times a year depending upon how much dust is in your home is very important. Clogged filters allow more dust particles to get through and reek havoc on your system. I have included a list of items to maintain on your HVAC system. Maintaining these areas will keep your HVAC system running more efficient and running longer. Below is a checklist of items you can maintain.

  • Keep filter clean
  • Clean the A coil (if access panel is present)
  • Clean the outside condenser
  • Clean the blower fan or squirrel cage
  • Oil blower motor  (if applicable)
  • Seal all duct work seams with tape
  • Clean burners
  • Update your thermostat
